In announcing the change, HBP’s General Manager Laurie Sloan said, “‘Cabin’ is a state of mind. This magazine’s audience embraces a lifestyle. The word cabin evokes tradition, family, security, Americana. It embodies comfort and coziness.” Ms. Sloan went on to cite other important factors:
Research: HBP has conducted focus groups, newsstand tests, reader surveys and SEO research, indicating that the term cabin appeals to a broader audience interested in a lifestyle choice in a new home. Country’s Best Cabins will continue to feature accessible home features, how-to and practical information for new home buyers and homeowners.
Differentiation: HBP also publishes Log Home Living, the leading log home magazine for 27 years. “Opening up Country’s Best to the ‘cabins’ term further differentiates our two titles into complementary niche categories,” said Sloan.
Lifestyle: In an interesting paradox, the log home industry and related publications have avoided the term cabin promoting the term “log homes” to convey a more upscale, permanent residence. Many consumers, however, have consistently gravitated to the down-to-earth comfort of the term cabins. Sloan says, “With both of these titles in our mix, we can satisfy our dual audience of aspirational, discerning Log Home Living readers and hands-on, practical readers of Country’s Best. Demographically, these readers are nearly the same: highly educated with excellent incomes. But psychographically they are different. By having two distinct magazine voices, we can deliver information to each group in a way that speaks to them very personally.”
